[talk] Database Research, Yi-Shin Chen
Given by Yi-Shin Chen, NTHU
01. Application domain
- Search Engine(google), CRM & ERP (7-11), oracle, on-line shop & CRM (amazon), on-line bank (citibank), DBMS application provider (Oracle), GPS Data and eMap,
VR(virtual reality, 例如在外科手術實習醫生訓練,記錄並分析在VR環境中的實習訓練過程), Networking, Multimedia Analysis, bio-tech (data mining, IR)
02. Motivation
- Database research is driven by new applications, techonology trends, new synergies with related fields, and innovation within the field itself.
03. Database Research
- database research is between bit strings and end user
- includs storage, indexing, optimization, analysis and mining, query and retrieval, gui
04. The Main Driving Forces
- internet
-- "cross enterprise" applications
-- stronger facilities for security and information integration
- science
-- large and complex data set and analysis
- DBMS
-- hardware 進步而有新的研究議題
- related techologies
-- data mining, IR, etc.
05. Integration of text, data, code and streams
06. Information Fusion
- in traditional, data is transformed from original data base to a central data warehouse, but it is not good enough
07. sensor data and sensor network
- 例如研究候鳥遷徙
08. multimedia query
- analyze, summarize, search, view
09. Reasoning about uncertain data
- traditional DBMS have no facilities for either approximate data or imprecise queries
-- almost all data are uncertain or imprecise
- DBMSs need built-in support for data imprecision
10. Personalization
- query answers should depend on the user
- a framework for including and exploiting appropriate metadata for personalization is needed
11. Data Mining
- focus on efficient ways to discover models of existing data sets
- develop better algorithms
- integrate data mining with querying, optimization, etc.
12. Self Adaptation
- modern DBMSs are more complex
-- in tradional, a DBA has to take care about the hardware and software condition of the DBMS and do some adaptations.
-- develop new methods to let DBMS to perform self-adaptation
13. Privacy
14. Trustworthy Systems (similar to #13. Privacy)
- digital right management
- robust
- protection and authorization
15. New User Interface
16. One-Hunderd-Year Storage
- archived information is disappearing
-- capture on a deteriorating medium
-- capture on a medium requiring obsolet devices
17. Query Optimization
(previouse #5 to #17 is proposed in 2002)
